Robert F. Schlager, MBA, CLU, ChFC

Robert Schlager obtained his BBA and MBA from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he met and married Reina.  He is a Chartered Financial consultant (ChFC), Registered Health Underwriter (RHU), and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).  After working for Laventhol & Horwath in Philadelphia as a Public Accountant, he became an Insurance/Investment Planner, moving to Florida in early 1984.

He is past president of the Lee County Chapter of the American Society of CLU's and ChFC's, currently called the Society of Financial Service Professionals, and has written in various area magazines and newspapers.  Robert is a  Rotarian and a long time past member of the Estate Planning and Planned Giving Councils of Lee County. 

Robert was President of Schlager & Associates, founded in 1984, which merged with a national accounting firm in February 2000.  After several years with the accounting firm, combining tax and financial planning services, Robert and Reina established the independent firm of SCHLAGER SCHLAGER & LEVIN

Reina L. Schlager, CPA, PFS*, RHU

Reina Schlager obtained her BBA Magna cum Laude from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she met and married Robert.  She is a Certified Public Accountant and worked for the international accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand.  While in Philadelphia, she was Assistant Treasurer and Director of Risk Management of the University of Pennsylvania.  While there, she authored a procedural manual entitled, "Insurance & Risk Management for University Personnel."

Reina has been on the Board of the Southwest Florida Symphony, and was an Officer/Board member of AGELINK - an information & referral network of public and private social services for Lee County seniors.  She was on the Health Advisory Task Force of then Congressman Porter Goss and the Advisory Board of the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center.  She is a board member of Page Healthcare Inc. which includes Shady Rest Nursing Pavilion, Inc., a non-profit nursing home facility in Lee County, the Shady Rest Foundation, and All About Home Health, Inc.  Reina is a Registered Health Underwriter and is a charter member and Secretary of the Board of CAMEO (Cooperative Associates Marketing Elderly Options) to help serve the elderly in Lee County. 

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has created a special designation for CPA's with requisite financial planning knowledge.  Reina has earned the designation of Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) from the AICPA.  She is a member of the AICPA PRIME PLUS ElderCare Task Force, as well as the Florida CPA Elder Planning and Support Services Committee.  She acts as liaison between the State and National Committees.  Reina and her husband, Robert, work together and live in Ft. Myers.  They have two adult children.

A regular speaker at local colleges and universities, Reina has been a contributing writer/guest for local periodicals, television, radio and workshops for the general public and peer professionals.  Topics have included:  Long-term Care, End-of-Life Planning, Investments, and Estate and Tax Planning.

After seventeen years co-owning Schlager & Associates, and several years having merged with a national accounting firm, Reina and Robert established the independent firm of SCHLAGER SCHLAGER & LEVIN, in 2006, and includes long-time associate, Kenneth Levin.  Contact Reina at reinaschlager@ssladvisors.com.

Kenneth Levin was born in 1963. He began his financial planning career in 1992 with Physicians Health Care Plans. In 1996 he became a Registered Representative with Washington Square Securities specializing in insurance, investment, and tax planning for business owners in Southwest Florida. To further his financial planning career Mr. Levin concentrated on financial courses through The American College until he received his RFC, Registered Financial Consultant designation in 2000.

The Registered Financial Consultant (RFC) designation is a credential for persons in the field of financial planning. The designation is awarded by the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) to those financial advisors who can meet the high standards of education, experience and integrity that are required of all its members.

The IARFC is a non-profit professional credentialing organization of proven financial professionals formed to foster public confidence in the financial planning profession, to help financial advisors exchange planning techniques, and to give deserved recognition to those practitioners who are truly committed to ethical standards and continuous professional education.

A Registered Financial Consultant has met the qualifications required to serve the public effectively, and moreover, is committed to essential professional continuing education.


Curriculum

Candidates are required to complete a self-study process to attain the RFC designation. The preparation curriculum consists of ten volumes mirroring that of the CFP preparation, and covers the following six topics:

  • Financial Planning Process
  • Insurance Planning
  • Retirement Planning
  • Investment Planning
  • Income Tax Planning
  • Estate Planning

 Additional Requirements

Candidates must meet the following education, experience and ethical requirements:

  • Candidate either has attained a professional designation (i.e. CLU, ChFC, and CFP), or has earned a baccalaureate or graduate degree in financial planning with strong emphasis on subjects relating to economics, accounting, business, statistics, finance and similar studies; this granting institution must offer an IARFC-approved or CFP equivalent college curriculum and be an accredited college or university
  • Met four years of experience, providing evidence of having met license requirements for securities plus life and health insurance, or submits RIA affiliation information
  • Candidate must have a sound record of business integrity with no suspensions or revocation of any professional licenses
  • All members must agree to devote a minimum of 40 hours per year of Professional Continuing Education in the field of personal finance and professional practice management.
  • Designees must subscribe to the IARFC Code of Ethics
  • Designees must submit an annual renewal including $100 in dues

From 1999 to 2006 Kenneth worked for Prime Capital Services as a Financial Advisor for national accounting firm. Joining Cambridge Investment Research in 2006 Kenneth partnered with Robert Schlager and Reina Schlager and established the independent firm of Schlager Schlager & Levin-SS&L. In 2010 Kenneth and the partners of SSL became Registered Representatives with J.W. Cole Financial, Inc. and an Investment Advisor Representative of JRAG. Matthew J Ruttenberg, Financial Advisor

Matthew J Ruttenberg graduated from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and a Finance concentration.  Matthew joined Prudential Financial, after college, partnering with his late father, James F Ruttenberg, a thirty-year insurance industry veteran, as well as a Financial Planner.

After working at Prudential Financial for several years, Matthew relocated to Southwest Florida where he became an Investment Representative with Fifth Third Securities, as well as being Florida insurance-licensed.

Matthew joined SCHLAGER SCHLAGER & LEVIN (SS&L) in 2010 where he is able to offer tax strategies and expand his financial services expertise by being part of this team of advisors who have been serving the Southwest Florida area since 1984.

Matthew is a current member of the Senior Agent’s Forum, Fort Myers Young Professionals’ Chamber of Commerce and is an approved advisor for the Lee County Public School District to offer 403b’s to local teachers.  Matthew also is serving as Vice President of a local chapter of BNI.  He is a member of the Fort Myers Freedom Boat Club and golf’s regularly at various local golf courses.
